“So... you're actually gonna ride that thing today?”

My friend asked me this as we stood at the base of Going-to-the-Sun Road in Glacier National Park. The "thing" in question was a mountain bike that, admittedly, had seen better days. I got it as a birthday present when I was 13, and had definitely gotten my (...parents'...) money's worth out of it. 

Unphased by his comment, I responded "Grit over gear, man! So... you comin', or what??"

That became my motto for the day. As I made my way up the mountain, my gears clanked, my chain slipped, but my tires kept turning. I made it to the top—and had a blast getting there.

After that day, “grit over gear” was always in the back of my mind, consciously or not. I always strived to make the most with what I had, and tried to invest in myself as a person before jumping to the best, fanciest equipment.

What began as a personal motto became our mission.

Today, we’re sharing this message with the world. Grit Over Gear is, at its core, a mindset, a movement, and a community. It shifts the focus from flashy gear to the power of determination, heart, and getting out into nature exactly as you are.

Our philosophy stands on three pillars:

Don't get us wrong - we love nice gear! But never let nice gear-or the lack of it-stop you from starting something you love.
